Mortals, unneeded and unwanted by Heaven, are doomed to be crushed by the weight of their own mediocrity; dust falls to the earth and is forgotten by the Sky. A bowl is shaped from the fallen dust, but it is the hollow that makes it a bowl; and so a Xian is born hollow, into a body meant for finer things than she will ever be. She knows the emptiness as a hunger. And so, she spends her life being filled: by the clan that lends her its dead, by the craft that claims her hands, by the Heaven she climbs toward and never holds. But a bowl is treasured, though it be made of clay, because it is empty; and a bowl which completes itself becomes full at last, and good for nothing at all — and is still just as easily shattered.
A Xian gains the following racial features:
- Heart Demons: A Xian is threatened by Heart Demons that could kill her or possess her, and which grow in power as she grows as a Xian.
- Hyskeu in Heaven: A Xian can gain power, or lose it, depending on her deeds, and can gain enormous power by acting like she already holds it.
- The Endless Path: Xian gain free feats which must be unlocked after taking to provide their benefits.
- Wind and Breath: A Xian has sensory abilities that outstrip those of most other races.
- Skillful: A Xian gains flexible bonuses to her ability scores depending on her dress and treats all tools as Masterwork.
- Spiritual Root: All Xian have a spiritual root which grants them some measure of power and makes it easier to cultivate in specific environs.
- Storied Legacy: A Xian is not her own person, and she owes a debt to those who came before and those who will come after.
- Body of the Great Dao: Some Xian have special constitutions which change their ability scores or provide them unique abilities.
A Xian does not gain any optional features; however, you should choose subfeatures from each of Body of the Great Dao and Spiritual Root.
In addition, a Xian gains access to the feats of The Endless Path and has a greatly reduced risk of killing herself in the process.
