Pseudodemons
Refugees from Reality
Descent from a demon leaves traces in mortals. Not in the blood, exactly — blood is just blood. It leaves traces in the way the world fits around them: poorly. They are one step out of time with a world that was not built for a broken thing, and through the cracks of that broken thing the light of the Other Side leaks. Yet the cracks illuminate, and being a step away from the world of instances gives them a vantage point no one else has…if they can bear the vertigo.
Singular Pseudodemon
Denominative Pseudodemonic
She was born a Man, or an elf, or a dwarf, or something else entirely — and she is that thing, mostly. She has a mother and a father and a name and a birthday and all the other things that other people have. But somewhere in the line between her and everyone else, something from the Other Side touched the chain of lives and left a mark, and the mark did not fade. It is not in the blood. Blood is just blood. It is in the fit — the way her soul sits in the world, slightly crooked, like a door hung on bent hinges that will never quite close.
Dogs bark at her. Crows follow her and will not leave. The rain does not hit her properly. Her shadow moves a fraction too late, or in the wrong direction, or in a direction that does not exist, and sometimes her body stutters, like the world is unsure where she is. Nymphs look at her like something scraped off the bottom of a shoe. The Fair Folk look at her like a nail hammered crooked. She is not exiled from a family or a community but from the world itself.
Demons are not from the world of “is”. They are from the world of must-be, where things are what they mean rather than what they are made of. A pseudodemon is not a person with demon blood. A pseudodemon is a person through whom the rules of a world she has never visited leak into the one where she lives. So the world does not fit her, and she does not fit in it. She is bad at the things that come easily to everyone else. Her hands are clumsy on a door latuch; she can barely see it through the half-images, the ghost of a door that should have been there, the memory of a wall that was never built. She trips over stairs that aren’t there. She reaches for cups that don’t exist. Routine tasks go wrong in her hands not because she is stupid or careless but because the ground itself cannot decide, under her feet, where she stands, or if she is standing at all.
But she can see the colour of a man’s guilt. She can hear whether someone is lying the way others hear whether someone is shouting. To be descended from a succubus is to see Lust Without Love the way others see the colour blue. To be descended from a shinanite is to hear the weight of sin the way others hear birdsong. Everything hidden, everything sealed, everything warded — these are boundaries drawn in the logic of the material, and she is a crack in that logic. She does not so much break through things as fail to be stopped by them. She does not try to see things so much as they are revealed to her, and though it is a kind of madness to see the world from afar, it is not something that she has chosen to do.
A pseudodemon does not do things so much as things happen around her. She walks into a room and the room rearranges itself around her. Wards fray. Boundaries weaken. The world shifts in a direction without name. She did not cast anything. She is present, and presence is enough — because the rules are suggestions, and there is a part of her which gets a vote. She is a thing the world does not know what to do with, and there she sits, in the gap between what others can effortlessly be and what the world will not allow. The probable and the impossible both are closed to her, and so she finds that she must be extraordinary — and that she can be, for what is improbable for others is in turn effortless for her.
