A boar resembles the common swine, and indeed it acts much like swine. It wants the roots and acorns and the soft edges of a farmer’s field, and it is not a predator. But unlike the common swine it is not content to be led to slaughter, and unlike a predator it has no interest in living to fight another day.

A wolf weighs its chances and breaks when they turn against it, but a boar that has resolved to charge has already made its peace, and there is no discouraging it short of killing it. A boar does not die easily, either; its skin is tough as hardwood, and a spear through the chest does not kill the thing; it has been known to drive itself up the shaft to reach whoever is holding the other end. A careful hunter’s boar-spear carries a crossbar below the head, and the careless are buried in pieces.
